A Refreshing Balance of Intricacy and Refined Simplicity

You start by turning yarmulkes into doll dresses, then you design a dress made from leather strips and dressmaker hooks and eyes, and before you know it you have a studio in Tribeca and everyone is raving about your work. Perhaps not quite that simple, but this letter Z designer’s career in fashion went from triumph to triumph. In 2001 he launched his own line. He was twenty-one. Two years later he was given The Perry Ellis Award for Womenswear by the CFDA.

Words used to describe Zac Posen and his creations: innovation, sophistication, couture technique, glamour, feminine. Your fashion maven has her own descriptive terms for what strikes her when she sees Zac Posen’s latest runway offerings: a refreshing balance of intricacy and refined simplicity. Follow Zac Posen on Instagram.

In partnership with David’s Bridal, he has created the Truly Zac Posen line of affordable wedding gowns.

He was also asked to design uniforms for Delta Airlines employees.

Women everywhere love Zac Posen’s clothing, but none more than those who chose to wear his evening gowns on the red carpet.

For those who do not know who the Fashion Maven speaks of when she mentions the revered name of Selina Shirley. She is the latest bright star at the House of Shirley established long ago, far in the future on the Federation planet, Tallav. Her love story has been published in Maon: Marshal of Tallav.

Experimental, Radical, Unorthodox – Avante Garde – Fashion Maven A to Z

This letter Y designer does things differently. He is the definition of avante garde: experimental, radical, and unorthodox. Whether it’s his 1999 wedding collection or his collaboration with Adidas, he infuses his designs with his unique beliefs about clothing.

Yohji Yamamoto in his own words:

“Clothing doesn’t lie, it shows everything.”

“I want to achieve anti-fashion through fashion. That’s why I’m always heading in my own direction, in parallel to fashion.”

“In order to create an image almost similar to that of a pencil case standing up and walking, I try to eliminate all excess by cutting. I have the feeling that this process (of “cutting off”) is linked in some way to “elegance”. Elegance and so-called “eliminating excess”, or the beauty that remains after excess has been eliminated…”

“My role in all of this is very simple. I make clothing like armor. My clothing protects you from unwelcome eyes.”

“I hate fashion. Or the word fashion, which sounds colorful, extravagant, expensive and gorgeous. “I never wanted to walk the main street of fashion. I have been walking the sidewalks of fashion from the beginning, so I’m a bit dark.”

“Adidas is a very personal inspiration to me. It has enriched my creative life. It’s an exchange between different cultures, different ideas, and most of all, it is teamwork.”

“Ten years ago, together with Adidas we created something that did not exist before and completely projected the future. My desire was and is to make sportswear elegant and chic. Adidas is a very personal inspiration to me … it enriches my creative life.”

Stretch, Color, Shine, and Print – Fashion Maven A to Z

This designer’s name is Lamine Badian Kouyaté, but the letter X comes into play in the name of his fashion line which means “keep an open mind.” He began by taking cast offs and second hand clothing finds and reworking them into new pieces. Xuly Bet was launched in 1989. The first show, a guerilla show, was held in the rain outside Jean Paul Gaultier’s tent.

Here are some of his early pieces. Note the two tops made of nylons layered over the dress in the second picture.

His more recent work has left behind the raw seams of his early work, but are still full of ripe luscious color, amazing prints, stretch fabrics, and shine.
