Such a story, my dears. He saved the House of Dior when his mentor, Christian Dior, died at age 52, leaving our letter S designer in charge. His first feat of design derring-do was the trapeze dress. Later, after establishing his own fashion house, he went on to set trends with the Mondrian collection in 1965, the Le Smoking tuxedo suit for women in 1966, and the safari jacket in 1968. Perhaps his greatest legacy is that he was the first couturier in France to create a line of ready-to-wear that he sold in his own Rive Gauche boutique.

Who couldn’t love the beautiful garments created for the Russian Ballet and Opera Collection, the Chinese and Opium Collection, or the Shakespeare and the Poets Collection? Who but Yves Saint Laurent could make such magnificent clothing? His collections were often inspired by artist Picasso, Van Gogh, and Matisse. Saint Laurent retired and his haute-couture house closed. A sad day for all.
